FACE/OFF 2 Loses Its Director, But The Nicolas Cage Sequel Isn’t Dead Yet
Things just got a little shaky for Face/Off 2. Paramount Pictures’ long-developing sequel to the 1997 sci-fi action classic has hit a speed bump.
According to a new report, Adam Wingard (The Guest, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire), who was previously attached to direct the film, has stepped away from the project.
The studio is now having filmmakers come in to pitch their take on what Face/Off 2 would be. So, the they aren’t pulling the plug entirely on the film, and Nicolas Cage is still interested in returning.
There’s no reason given as to why Wingard departed the project, but maybe his ThunderCats movie is actually moving forward.
While there’s no release date window for Face/Off 2 as of yet, the original Face/Off is currently available to stream on Paramount+ and The Criterion Channel.
The original Face/Off, directed by John Woo, hit theaters in 1997 and quickly cemented itself as one of the wildest action thrillers of the decade. The film starred John Travolta as FBI agent Sean Archer and Nicolas Cage as terrorist mastermind Castor Troy in a story that fully embraced its high-concept insanity.
The official synopsis still reads like peak ’90s action madness: ““Obsessed with bringing terrorist Castor Troy (Nicolas Cage) to justice, FBI agent Sean Archer (John Travolta) tracks down Troy, who has boarded a plane in Los Angeles.
“After the plane crashes and Troy is severely injured, possibly dead, Archer undergoes surgery to remove his face and replace it with Troy’s. As Archer tries to use his disguise to elicit information about a bomb from Troy’s brother, Troy awakes from a coma and forces the doctor who performed the surgery to give him Archer’s face.”
It’s be interesting to see how this sequel turns out, if it actually ends up getting made.
