Not long ago it was announced that Godzilla vs. Kong director Adam Wingard was hired to direct a sequel to John Woo’s classic 1997 action film Face/Off. I love the fact that this is going to be a direct sequel and not a reboot, and it would be so cool to see John Travolta and Nicolas Cage reprise their roles in the film. The director seems to think that as well and wants to get the two actors back on board.

During a recent interview with Showbiz CheatSheet, the filmmaker said:

“Some people just assume when I say that that it just means it takes place in the world of Face/Off. To me, Face/Off isn’t about a procedure or anything like that. It’s not about the world that the characters exist in. It’s about Sean Archer and it’s about Castor Troy. That’s what this movie is about. It’s the continuation of that story. It’s hard to talk about other than that but this is, to me, the definitive continuation of that saga.”

Wingard also revealed in the interview that he’s currently writing the script with Simon Barrett and that story will feature both of the characters. We just have to wait and see what they think of the script because their involvement hinges on that. The final draft of the script is almost done. He goes on to say:

“They’ve read our outline. Everybody’s on board with it but actually turning in the script’s a different thing so we’ll see how everybody reacts to it.”

We don’t have any details on the story and it’s unclear how they will bring Nicolas Cage’s character back to life for the movie because he died at the end of the original film. Maybe Cage’s face was put on ice for someone else to put on? Wingard did say, "The story is leading us in a very specific direction.”

It’ll be interesting to see what Wingard has in store for this movie.
