FALLOUT Designer Todd Howard Talks About the Insane Attention to Detail Put Into the Series
Prime Videos’ Fallout series is pretty damn awesome. Not only is the story and characters great, but the whole setting and production are incredible!
I’m loving all of the cool little details, and it turns out there are so many other details that you wouldn’t even notice unless someone told you about them that was on the set to see them.
Bethesda director and Fallout game designer Todd Howard did visit the set and he shares the crazy lengths the Fallout TV show went to for the props audiences will never see.
While speaking with The Guardian, Howard said: "I got to set and I thought there’d be more movie magic, but they literally just built a multi-level Vault.”
He explained: "They obsessed over everything. I went into the overseer’s office, I sat down at the desk and there was a stack of papers, and someone had written out a note – then I turned it over and there was a report on the power in the Vault. They even got a real jetpack in there!"
Series star Ella Purnell, who plays Lucy, talked about the level of detail on the series as well saying: "The attention to detail was insane.”
She added: “I really do think it allows you to be better at your job because you’re reacting in real time. You’re able to improvise a little and collaborate with your director because you’re able to say, ‘Well, what if I did this?’ because you’ve got props all around you, every notebook is full. You get to really play. It is a playground, isn’t it?"
Fallout is the story of “haves and have-nots in a world in which there’s almost nothing left to have. 200 years after the apocalypse, the gentle denizens of luxury fallout shelters are forced to return to the irradiated hellscape their ancestors left behind — and are shocked to discover an incredibly complex, gleefully weird and highly violent universe waiting for them.”
Ella Purnell plays Lucy, an optimistic Vault-dweller with an all-American can-do spirit. Her peaceful and idealistic nature is tested when she is forced to the surface to rescue her father. Aaron Moten is Maximus, a young soldier who rises to the rank of squire in the militaristic faction called Brotherhood of Steel. He will do anything to further the Brotherhood’s goals of bringing law and order to the wasteland.
The world of Fallout is “one where the future envisioned by Americans in the late 1940s explodes upon itself through a nuclear war in 2077. In Fallout, the harshness of the wasteland is set against the previous generation’s utopian idea of a better world through nuclear energy. It is serious in tone, yet sprinkled with moments of ironic humor and B-movie-nuclear-fantasies.”
The story for the series is set in future post-apocalyptic Los Angeles, and it will tell an original story based on the Fallout games and this new story will be part of the canon of the games.
Walton Goggins plays the Ghoul, a morally ambiguous bounty hunter who holds within him a 200-year history of the post-nuclear world. These three meet when chasing an artifact from an enigmatic researcher that has the potential to radically change the power dynamic in this world.
The series comes from Westworld creators Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy.
