FAN CHRONICLES Is a New Documentary Series from Crunchyroll to Show How Diverse People Enjoy Anime

Crunchyroll is well-known for being an anime streaming service. Now, they’ve launched a new documentary series called Fan Chronicles. This series was made in conjunction with Portal A and follows the lives of three anime fans to show how anime has inspired them. Each episode of the series runs for roughly 10 minutes and the subjects are all different.

In each 10-minute documentary episode, we follow the story of an anime fan for whom anime has served as an inspiration – from a young woman in Cape Cod coping with a rare disease to a music producer in Atlanta finding an audience through anime-inspired tracks to a photographer California finding a message of female empowerment through the art form.

Over the last 10+ years, I’ve seen a shift in the public perception of anime. It used to be this ultra-nerdy, dark, secret thing that was really uncool. I even remember people referring to it as “Japanimation.” Now, more people are enjoying the medium, and it’s become a bit more mainstream. However, there are still people who aren’t super open about their love for the medium. Hopefully this series can help continue to change the stigma by showing that people of all different kinds enjoy anime and it’s not bad. Check out the trailer below and you can watch all three episodes now on Crunchyroll.
