Fangoria Producing a New Horror Film Based on the Greek Legend Medusa with Director Anna Chazelle
Fangoria Studios has announced they are producing a new untitled film based on the Greek legend of Medusa. That film is being being written and directed by Anna Chazelle, who will also executive produce.
My first introduction to Medusa was in the original Clash of the Titans movie from the ‘80s, which is such an awesome film. Medusa was one of three Gorgon sisters with venomous snakes for hair, whose gaze could turn those around her to stone. She met her demise at the hands of the demigod Perseus, who took her head and used it to turn the giant Kraken to stone.
Producer Armen Aghaeian said in a statement, “Medusa is a global icon, yet her story has been overlooked for far too long. Anna’s interpretation of Medusa against the backdrop of Ancient Greece will make for a cinematic journey to remember.”
Chazelle, who previously directed short films The Pitch and Narrow, added, “It’s easy to demonize Medusa, but her story is filled with justifiable feminine rage, both at the gods who created her and the mortals who seek to destroy her. I’m excited to dive into the tale of her nascence into the Greek pantheon, and hopefully challenge the widely-accepted definition of Medusa as a mere monster.”
I actually love that someone is looking to focus on Medusa and tell her story in a movie. She’s such a fascinating character, and I’m surprised a film like this hasn’t happened sooner.
