FANTASTIC BEASTS: J.K. Rowling Talks Johnny Depp Becoming Grindelwald
At GeekTyrant we treated the news of Johnny Depp being cast as Grindelwald as a minor spoiler, especially as it's described as being nearly a cameo in the first Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them film. It seems the marketing machine couldn't just let this be something revealed in the movie. Now that it's fairly well-known, J.K. Rowling spoke very openly about it to MTV.
Rowling on Depp inhabiting the character of Grindelwald across from Eddie Redmayne as Newt Scamander:
"Watching him create a character is fascinating. It's been quite inspiring to me as the writer. I feel he's got quite an interesting approach to creating a character. It's a privilege to work with someone like that. It's very similar to the way Eddie works and moves around and inhabits the character. The physicality is exactly right."
We only get glimpses at Grindelwald in the Harry Potter films. Who he is and what he's done is a lot clearer in the books. The Fantastic Beasts series of films will cover 19 years across five films. It's pretty easy to see that Depp will be the big bad of these movies, and I couldn't be more excited to see his full performance in the coming sequel.
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them opens this weekend, November 18th (USA).
