FARGO Season 3 Won't Premiere Until 2017
I haven't seen last night's season two finale of Fargo yet (no spoilers, please!), but the rest of the season has been downright spectacular. I'm itching to see how it ends after the bloodbath of the penultimate episode, and I'm thrilled that creator/showrunner Noah Hawley is coming back for a third season, which will jump forward and time and take place after the first season. (The first season took place in 2006, while the second season was set in 1979.)
Entertainment Weekly spoke with Hawley after the finale last night and revealed some distressing news: after the first two seasons aired only a year apart, the third season won't premiere until 2017.
“You won’t see it in 2016,” Hawley said of his show. “It’s a winter show, and we don’t have the time to film this winter.” Hawley said that that production for season 3 will likely begin in November of 2016.
But at least we know some more details about what the third season will entail. According to the showrunner, "season 3 will take place in 2010 and have a more contemporary feel (according to Hawley, season 3 will take place in a “selfie-oriented culture”)." That sounds great to me, although Hawley warns we might not see much of characters we recognize from the first season:
“The danger of bringing [past characters] back is the artifice is too clear,” Hawley said. He went on to say that it simply wouldn’t be believable for these characters to go through so many of these crazy scenarios.
That makes total sense, and since I consider this man to be a storytelling genius, I'm willing to follow him wherever he wants to go with this series, which has been one of my favorites of all time in its two seasons thus far. It sucks that we have to wait until 2017 to see more, but as a fan of the absurd waits between seasons of Sherlock, I'm pretty used to it by now.
