FAST AND FURIOUS Producer Thinks The Franchise Should Go Back To Where it Started

Fast and Furious producer Neal Moritz has some thoughts on the franchise that has turned into a parody of itself. There are only two more films coming and they will close out the franchise. As that ending approaches, Nortiz thinks that the series should actually go back to the basics, he thinks the franchise should go back to where it all started.

In an interview on The Town with Matthew Belloni, Moritz opened up about the future of the Fast and Furious film series, and he said he’d like to see it go smaller after years of trying to make it bigger and more ridiculous. I mean, this franchise is now just completely bonkers. If you watch that first film, you’ll wonder how in the hell it got to where the franchise is now. He says:

“Honestly, I think going forward I'd like to actually go smaller. And I'd like to kind of start to go back to where we started. I think that's an interesting way to go. I like to zig and then zag. I like to try and do something different and I think that's what audiences demand these days.”

I would actually love to see the franchise take a step back and take a more simple approach to storytelling. But, I think it’s too late for that. With the franchise coming to an end, I don’t think the goal is going to be to make a smaller movie, I think the goal is to give fans the Avengers: Endgame of Fast and Furious films.

We have no idea what the plans for the franchise are after these next two films, but there have been talks of spinoffs. So, maybe these new spinoffs will take a “back to the basics” approach. When talking about what the plans are for the future films, Moritz says he just wants to take one thing at a time: “Let’s make a great movie and then we’ll figure out the next one.”

Franchise director Justin Lin will be back to helm the next two films, and some of the other cast members joining Vin Diesel include Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Ludacris, Sung Kang, and Charlize Theron. Jason Momoa is also set to play a villain in the film, which he described as a “very flamboyant bad boy." Brie Larson also recently joined the family.

The plot details of the film are also still being kept under wraps. Diesel did previously tease that there are “angles coming” to the mythology that will make fans smile.

What would you like to see from the future films of the Fast and Furious franchise? Would you like to see it go smaller, or are you just enjoying the absurdity of it all?
