FELIX THE REAPER Features Hard Puzzles, a Cute Story, and Patrick Stewart

Felix the Reaper released on all major platforms on Thursday, and I’ve been lucky enough to be playing it. It is a lot of fun. It’s a puzzle game that is really challenging as you have to think about where the shadows will be as you rotate the sun. This throws in a lot of challenges as you can only move around to accomplish your goal in the shadows. Combine that with a fun and cute story and Patrick Stewart’s voice (that’s right, he’s voicing your mentor in this one), and you get a really fun indie game.

The premise of the game is that you play Felix, a grim reaper who likes to dance, looks like Baymax’s cousin, and has a crush on Betty from the Ministry of Life. Your mentor doesn’t seem quite sure about Felix’s goal of courting Betty, but if it gets the job done, why not? The job is manipulating things to cause the death of specific targets by the way. It’s not the deepest story, but it’s fun.

When it came to the art of the game, I actually enjoyed it. It’s fairly unique, although the character designs did remind me of the Raving Rabbids games. The bright environment really helps you see where the shadows are as well, which is key. Felix moves around like a dancer, and it’s fun to watch as well. The graphics may not be super fancy, but they look nice.

The music isn’t my cup of tea, but it does fit with the game. If you’re into indie dance music, you’ll probably enjoy the soundtrack.

Finally, the gameplay. Overall, this game is easy to pick up and try your hand at. However, the puzzles get hard fast. If you get stuck, there is an option to see what the next step in the puzzle is, and oftentimes, I found this very helpful once a level if I got really stuck. If you love puzzles, you’ll love Felix the Reaper. One complaint I do have is that it wasn’t always clear to me which objects I could pick up. For some reason, I couldn’t pick up a trash can, but an oil drum is A-OK.
