FINAL FANTASY XV - "Dawn" Trailer Gives Us Look Into Noctis' Past

Square Enix has given us a small glimpse of how things came to be in the kingdom of Lucis. The newest trailer for Final Fantasy XV, titled "Dawn," shows Noctis in his youth alongside his father, King Regis. The most impressive scene in the trailer is towards the end, with those three imposing shadows hovering beyond their protective shield. Square Enix also provided a bit more insight into how the kingdom fell.

The destiny of the stars is set in motion 15 years before the events of FINAL FANTASY XV. As the shadow of turmoil is cast over the land, there is hope on the horizon as an unbreakable bond is forged between a father and son, and the light of a new dawn rises on a hero.

In a matter of days, the Kingdom of Lucis is to sign an armistice, ending a long and bitter conflict with Niflheim. Ahead of the ceremony, Prince Noctis, heir to the Lucian throne, sets forth from his homeland to formalize the union of states through his marriage to the Lady Lunafreya of the imperial province of Tenebrae.
The offer of peace, however, is no more than a ruse to lower the Lucian shield, and the imperial army takes the crown city and its sacred crystal in one fell swoop. En route to his destination, Noctis is shocked to learn that he, his father the king, and his betrothed are believed dead.
Overnight, the dream of peace has faded into a distant memory. His world crumbling around him, Noctis has naught but his resolve and his loyal companions to see him through the trials to come.

These bits of lore and history are a welcome sight, as right now Noctis is a bit of a blank slate with a cool design. I’m always a sucker for a ragtag resistance versus oppressive government story, and it seems that things are certainly tilting that way. The combat revealed thus far has impressed, but you won’t be just fighting for 80 plus hours, and the narrative needs to get me invested. Hopefully this is just the first of many upcoming updates on what the storyline of Final Fantasy XV has in store.
