First Concept Art and Details Revealed for Pixar’s CARS 3

There really hasn’t been much news on Cars 3 since Pixar first announced it, but thanks to USA Today we have some new information on the series. They also released a couple pieces of concept art featuring a new character named Cruz Ramirez.

The newspaper offered up a bit of information on the plot of the film explaining that Lightning McQueen (Owen Wilson) “will need help to compete in the increasingly high-tech racing world of the upcoming Cars 3. That’s where the new trainer comes in — the sleek, yellow Cruz Ramirez is a young Hispanic female race car who instructs Lightning McQueen, as this exclusive concept art depicts during a beach run.”

McQueen is being trained for the Florida 500, which is basically like the Daytona 500. Cars 3 director Brian Fee went on to talk about the new character in the story, saying:

“Cruz Ramirez is trying to figure out how this old dog can learn some new tricks. Think of where he’d be in his career now in real time. (McQueen) is not an old man, but he’s one of the older cars on the circuit with new rookies coming in. People start to wonder and ask when he might retire.”

Fee goes on to reveal another character named Jackson Storm who McQueen will be going up against. He’s a young rookie looking to make his mark in the sport, but McQueen isn’t going to make it easy for him. Here’s what the director had to say:

“Jackson Storm is the face of these rookies who have come onto the scene. And McQueen is in a position where his entire racing generation is being pushed out. But it’s too early to be shown the door right now.
“Everyone can relate to feeling like someone is at their heels, that they might be a little outdated in something they used to be very good at, feeling an expiration date. And knowing you need someone to help you get a second chance.”

I’ve never really been a big fan of the Cars movies, so I can’t say that I’m looking forward to this sequel. The studio is just soaking as much cash as they can out of this franchise.

Other characters set to return to the next film includes Mater (Larry the Cable Guy), Sally Carrera (Bonnie Hunt), and Ramone (Cheech Marin).

Cars 3 is coming to theaters on June 16th, 2017.
