First Footage From DC Vertigo's Mob Film THE KITCHEN Screens at CinemaCon with Melissa McCarthy, Tiffany Haddish, and Elisabeth Moss

Warner Bros. shared some of the first footage from their upcoming feature film adaptation of the DC Vertigo graphic novel The Kitchen at CinemaCon, and I’ve gotta say… I was impressed by what I saw! This is going to be a hardcore and gritty crime movie, and it’s not something you’d expect from the cast.

The movie stars Melissa McCarthy, Tiffany Haddish, and Elisabeth Moss as as the wives of Irish mobsters who take over organized crime operations in the 1970s in New York City's Hell's Kitchen neighborhood after the FBI arrests their husbands.

McCarthy takes on the role of Kathy Brennan, “a devoted mother of two whose initial reluctance to enter the criminal domain is eventually diminished by her deft abilities.”

Haddish plays Ruby O'Carroll, “an outsider in an Irish community who seeks self-sufficiency once her husband is not around to protect her.”

Then there’s Moss as Claire Walsh, “a timid wife of an abusive husband who falls in love with the violence of her new life.” I think her character is going to steal the show! She goes off the chain!

These are all fantastic roles for these actresses, and it looks like they are going to give awesome performances! I wasn’t sure what to expect from this movie, but I was definitely impressed with what I saw and I’m completely sold on seeing the movie.

The fact that it deals with woman in these high profile hardcore mob roles is just something we haven’t really seen, and that’s one of the many things that makes this movie look unique. The movie Widows kind of did it, but this movie seems to take it to a new level. The director of the film, Andrea Berloff, explained that she wanted to direct this particular mob drama because she was “excited by the idea of placing women in a position and world in which we don’t normally see them.” When talking about the casting, she said:

“I wanted that excitement of women in a Mob movie to permeate through the casting, so I cast people you wouldn’t expect across the board. If we’re defying stereotypes, let’s defy them all over. Who says women can’t run the Mafia? Who says comedians can’t do drama?”

McCarthy added, “It’s about these individuals instead of the Mafia as an entity. It was more about three people who are put down and held back finally breaking out. There was much more humanity to it, which also made it scarier.”

The movie looks like it will be filled with intensity and brutal action. I really enjoyed what I saw in the footage and I hope that a trailer is released soon so that you can see it for yourself.

The Kitchen also stars Domnhall Gleeson as Gabriel O'Malley,” an intense Vietnam vet who worked for the neighborhood gangsters as a hitman before skipping town to avoid the police. He returns to settle scores when the wives take over and ends up falling for Claire.” Common plays an FBI Agent, and Bill Camp takes on the role of "the boss of a Brooklyn Italian crime family.”

The Kitchen will arrive in theaters on August 9th.
