First Impressions: GLOOMHAVEN's Guildmaster Update Is Incredible

Gloomhaven recently got a pretty big update for the digital version of the game. I’ve been playing it for a bit and thought I’d share my impressions of it.

Asmodee Digital was kind enough to send me a copy of Gloomhaven a couple of months ago, but honestly, I wasn’t impressed with it. I had heard great things about the board game, but because the game is still in Early Access, there was a lot of content not present in the game when I got it. After doing the tutorial, I found no real reason to do anything in the game except short skirmishes to try out characters. However, the new Guildmaster update has changed my attitude towards the digital version.

The Guildmaster update’s tutorial is way better at explaining how things work. Plus, they’ve turned the tutorial into a bit of a story instead of a bland experience. In addition, the tutorial doesn’t hold your hand as much. Yes, it requires you to do certain things and complete certain steps, but it lets you figure out how to accomplish some of those things, making it feel a bit more like a puzzle. This has me logging in more and more than I did before. I feel like there’s an actual purpose in the game and a goal for me to work towards, even if the full campaign hasn’t launched. If you didn’t enjoy Gloomhaven before, try it again. The Guildmaster update has done wonders. The game is now something that I would recommend friends to try.

Gloomhaven is available in Early Access on Steam now.
