First Impressions: TORCHLIGHT III Is a Pretty Good ARPG
Torchlight III recently went up on Steam via Early Access. I’ve been wanting to play a Torchlight game for years since a friend let me try the first one out several years ago. Well, Perfect World Entertainment was kind enough to send me a copy, and I thought I’d share my first impressions.
I actually am really enjoying Torchlight III. The game plays the same as hack and slash action RPG titles like Diablo. I do feel like the story is a little less prevalent than in some of the other games, but only marginally so in my opinion. You can create a custom character in a few different classes. You have the sharpshooter, the dusk mage, the forged, and the railmaster. It’s a pretty simple class breakdown with a ranged attacker, a spellcaster, a burst damage user, and your tank. I do really like that you can customize your character, although I was annoyed that I couldn’t rotate my character while customizing her to see the different hairstyles.
As for the graphics. I actually dig them. They’re cartoony, sure, but still enjoyable in my book. Everything matches everything else and feels cohesive from a graphics standpoint. I know some won’t enjoy them, but I don’t see any real problems with them.
Just like other titles in the same vein, Torchlight III features a bunch of clicking (if you’re playing on PC). It’s a lot of fun, and one of the things that I actually kind of like is that it’s online which means it’s easy to connect with other players in hub areas.
Coming in at only $29.99, I think Torchlight III is worth checking out if you like these ARPG titles. The game will release later this year on PC (outside of Early Access), PS4, and Xbox One.
