First Look Photos For Bradley Cooper's Leonard Bernstein Film Project MAESTRO
Netflix has shared a few photos from Bradley Cooper’s upcoming film project Maestro, which is a Leonard Bernstein biopic. Cooper is directing the film and he’s also taking on the role of the legendary and esteemed Broadway composer.
The photos feature Cooper as Bernstein at various ages, and the make-up work you’ll see, especially with Cooper as older Bernstein is pretty impressive. Some of the photos also feature Carey Mulligan playing Bernstein’s wife, Felicia Montealegre.
Cooper co-wrote the screenplay with Spotlight scribe Josh Singer, and he worked closely with the Bernstein family for three years developing the film.
Maestro will tell the “complex love story of Leonard and Felicia, a story that spans over 30 years–from the time they met in 1946 at a party and continuing through two engagements, a 25 year marriage, and three children: Jamie Bernstein, Alexander Bernstein and Nina Bernstein Simmons.”
Steven Spielberg was originally supposed to direct the film, but he ended up handing the project over to Cooper after they had a meeting. Cooper previously shared:
“I [told Spielberg], ‘I always felt like I could play a conductor, but may I research the material and see if I can write it and direct it? Would you let me do that?’ Steven has a lot of interests — he’ll just choose one thing and all of the other things will be on hold. I think he knew he wasn’t going to make that movie for a while. He was kind enough to hand it off to me, and that’s what I’ve been doing for the last four and a half years.”
Maestro will be released at some point in 2023.
