Trailer For DOCTOR WHO: DARK TIDES Brings Christopher Eccleston and Billie Piper Back for a Gothic Space Adventure
With the future of Doctor Who hanging in the balance, fans have been wondering where the franchise goes next. While the television series waits for whatever comes after the BBC's current plans, other corners of the Doctor Who universe are stepping up to keep new stories coming.
Thankfully, one of the franchise's most reliable storytellers is back with something that looks like an absolute blast.
Big Finish has officially revealed The Ninth Doctor Adventures: Dark Tides, a brand-new audio drama that reunites Christopher Eccleston and Billie Piper as the Ninth Doctor and Rose Tyler.
The adventure is set for release in August 2026, and it sounds like a creepy, high-stakes sci-fi tale packed with gothic horror, medieval influences, and deep-space mystery.
The story follows the Doctor and Rose beyond the edge of known space as they investigate the fate of the Vesterbold, a mapping ship that disappeared after venturing too far into the unknown. Now the vessel has mysteriously returned, and whatever came back with it sounds far more terrifying than anyone expected.
Here's the official synopsis: “A long-lost ship, the Vesterbold, has returned to normal space. And the Knights of Atlas seek her treasure. But two strangers have joined their expedition – the Doctor and Rose, who warn of danger.
“For the Vesterbold has drifted free of the Dark Tides at the edge of the universe. And she may have brought something back with her. Not even the bravest knights are ready for the evil which lies inside…”
The announcement comes at an interesting time for Doctor Who. The series finds itself in an uncertain place after the BBC put the iconic sci-fi franchise out for tender, a move that likely means it could be years before the television series returns in a new form.
Some fans have compared the current situation to the franchise's famous "Wilderness Years" following the show's cancellation in 1989. While the circumstances aren't exactly the same, tie-in media once again finds itself carrying the momentum for the franchise while television remains in limbo.
Ironically, the current situation may actually be more complicated than it was in 1989. Russell T. Davies wrapped up Season 15 with a cliffhanger regeneration that appeared to transform the Doctor into the likeness of Billie Piper.
It was clearly designed to spark excitement and help secure the show's future, but with no continuation announced, that ending has left expanded media in an awkward position.
Since nobody knows where the television story is heading, projects like Big Finish can only explore adventures from earlier eras of the Doctor's timeline.
Fortunately, that's exactly what Big Finish has spent decades doing. Since 1999, the company has built an incredible library of Doctor Who stories featuring beloved Doctors from across the franchise, including Tom Baker, Peter Davison, David Tennant, Jodie Whittaker, and Jo Martin's Fugitive Doctor.
Alongside those audio dramas, larger multimedia events like Time Lord Victorious, Doom's Day, and the current Circuit Breaker storyline have continued expanding the universe beyond television, even with various BBC licensing limitations.
Writer Tim Foley shared his enthusiasm for the project in the official press release, saying: “I’m delighted to be sending the Doctor and Rose into deep space, it’s the deepest kind of space at that, where impossible things lurk in the dark.
“But perhaps the light can be scarier than the dark… I’ve always wanted to write a brutal, gothic space adventure, so I can’t wait for you to meet the Knights of Atlas, and their curious damsel in distress, played by the brilliant Doon Mackichan.”
One of the most fun aspects of this story is that it finally gives the Ninth Doctor and Rose the kind of grand cosmic adventure many fans always wanted.
Their television season spent much of its time on or around Earth as Davies focused on making the newly revived series accessible for new audiences. It worked brilliantly, but it also meant Eccleston and Piper rarely got the sprawling space adventures that later Doctors would enjoy.
That's exactly what makes Dark Tides feel so exciting. Throwing the Ninth Doctor and Rose into the darkest reaches of the universe with haunted ships, mysterious knights, and whatever nightmare has emerged from the edge of existence sounds like a perfect fit for these characters.
With Doctor Who's television future still up in the air, it's great to see Big Finish continuing to deliver fresh adventures that fans can look forward to.
