First Look at Nicolas Cage as John Madden and Christian Bale as Al Davis in Amazon MGM’s MADDEN

Production has officially kicked off on Madden, and with it comes our first look at Nicolas Cage suited up as football legend John Madden, alongside Christian Bale as Raiders owner Al Davis.

The film is a collaboration between Amazon MGM Studios and Skydance Sports, and it’s shaping up to be one of the more surprising, and fascinating biopics in development.

The movie is being directed by David O. Russell, and Madden takes a unique approach to telling the story of the iconic coach, commentator, and unlikely video game pioneer.

Russell is working from his own script, which evolved from an earlier draft by Cambron Clark, and he's assembled a great cast. Alongside Cage and Bale, the film features John Mulaney as EA founder Trip Hawkins, Kathryn Hahn as Madden’s wife Virginia, and Sienna Miller as Al Davis’ wife Carol.

The film follows “Madden’s unusual journey. A lifelong teacher of football strategy, Madden reached the pinnacle of the coaching profession when his Raiders won the Super Bowl, but he had to walk away because the job was killing him.

“Though he’d never played a video game before, he found new purpose with EA, helping shape the player moves onscreen, and providing voiceover that created a better understanding of the game.

“That propelled him to work as a Madison Avenue pitchman and finally into the broadcast booth, and there has never been a better analyst, before or since.”

I’m curious to see how this movie turns out. Cage as Madden is very interesting casting, and Bale has the range and intensity to bring the eccentric, controversial Davis to life.
