First Look at Phil Lord and Chris Miller's Animated Film CONNECTED Where Technology Turns on Humanity

Sony Pictures Animation has shared our first look at Phil Lord and Chris Miller’s upcoming sci-fi comedy animated film, Connected. The last animated movie that Lord and Miller produced was Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse, which ended up being a massive hit!

This next film, Connected, centers around The Mitchells, “a dysfunctional but loving family, who goes on a road trip along with their pudgy family pug Monchi when nature-loving dad Rick decided that driving Katie to college is the perfect opportunity to bond as a family. However, their road trip is suddenly interrupted by a tech uprising that threatens mankind: all around the world, the electronic devices people love — from phones to self-driving cars, to a sleek new line of personal robots — turn on humanity. With the help of two malfunctioning robots and the family’s delightfully overweight pug, the Mitchells will have to get past their problems and work together to save each other and the world!”

The voice cast includes Abbi Jacobson (Broad City) as Katie Mitchell, an aspiring film nerd who’s just been accepted to her dream college; Danny McBride (Despicable Me, The Angry Birds Movie) as nature-loving dad Rick Mitchell; Maya Rudolph (Big Hero 6) as positive mom Linda Mitchell; and the film’s director Mike Rianda plays the quirkly little brother Aaron. It will also feature the voices of Eric Andre (The Lion King) as tech inventor Mark Bowman and Olivia Colman as Siri-like voice assistant called PAL.

When talking about the creation of the film, director Mike Rianda (Gravity Falls) said, “I tried to think about the two things that I loved the most, which was my crazy family… and also killer robots… It’s sort of a love letter to our imperfect human world, where it’s lovingly done but everything is kind of rumbly and a little bit wobbly. We wanted to show those imperfections, and we wanted to show them lovingly.”

Miller went on to say, “The big whiz-bang of the tech uprising [and] robot apocalypse makes for a lot of exciting action and comedy, but at the end of the day, the heart of this thing is this family.”

Lord added, “It’s one thing to fight the robot apocalypse, and that’s kind of a fun premise. But it’s much more interesting to have your dad trying to teach you to drive stick during the robot apocalypse.”

Connected sounds like it’s going to be a fantastically entertaining flick! It’s set to hit theaters on September 18th!
