First Look at Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans in The Russo Bros. $200 Million+ Netflix Espionage Thriller THE GRAY MAN
Netflix has shared some photos from Joe and Anthony Russo’s upcoming film The Gray Man, which is a huge espionage thriller that has a budget of over $200 million! The Russos are directing the film, and it’s their first big-budget blockbuster movie since Avengers: Endgame.
The movie stars Ryan Gosling, Chris Evans, and Ana de Armas, and these photos offer our first look at the characters they play.
The Gray Man is based on the best-selling book series by Mark Greaney, and Gosling takes on the role of Court Gentry, aka Sierra Six, a highly-skilled CIA black ops mercenary. When Six accidentally uncovers incriminating secrets about Agent Lloyd Hanson (Evans), a former colleague with psychopathic tendencies, Hanson puts a bounty on his head and launches a global manhunt led by international assassins.
Billy Bob Thorton also stars in the film as Six's handler Donald Fitzroy, and de Armas takes on the role of Agent Dani Miranda, a CIA operative who has Six's back. The rest of the cast includes Rege-Jean Page, Jessica Henwick, Dhanush, Wagner Moura, Julia Butters, Elme Ikwuakor, Michael Gandolfini, Sam Lerner, Robert Kazinsky, and Alfre Woodard.
In an interview with EW, Anthony Russo said, "We're big fans of the spy genre, and we're always looking for ways of how to twist it, or supercharge it, or push it into areas that feel fresh. There was a great idea at the center of this book, where it's not just about being a spy, but being the most extreme version of one, where you have to hide your own identity — and yourself."
Joe Russo went on to talk about the casting, saying, "It's hard to find somebody at Chris Evans' level to step into a villain. It's why you traditionally don't get a Ryan Gosling versus Chris Evans movie. But he's at a point where [playing the villain] is more entertaining to him than playing a hero, so we're able to get two giant movie stars that face off against each other. They're very complicated characters with competing agendas, and it's a fight to the death."
The screenplay for the film was written by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, who previously worked on Thor: The Dark World, Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame, along with all three Captain America films.
I love that Russos are making an espionage movie as Captain America: The Winter Soldier is one of my favorite Marvel films, and The Grey Man is getting back into that kind of territory, which is exciting!
The Gray Man will hit theaters on July 15th and make its global premiere on Netflix on July 22nd.
