First Look at Ryan Reynolds in His Upcoming Video Game Movie FREE GUY

We’ve got a cool new photo and information for you guys to check out from the upcoming video game movie, Free Guy, starring Ryan Reynolds (Deadpool). Empire provided the image and chatted with director Shawn Levy (Date Night, Real Steel, Stranger Things) about the film. In the interview, Levy said the story “hinges on Reynolds' titular Guy – who's really a non-playable character (NPC) in fictional video game Free City. And when the game falls into the hands of evil developers, it’s up to Guy to “change from innocent bystander to real hero.”

This sounds like a great role for Reynolds to play. It sounds like it will be wild and hilarious and totally action-packed. Reynolds is joined in the cast by Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok, Jojo Rabbit), Joe Keery (Stranger Things), Lil Rel Howery (Uncle Drew, Get Out), Channing Tatum (21 Jump Street, Foxcatcher), Utkarsh Ambudkar (Pitch Perfect, The Mindy Project), and Jodie Comer (Killing Eve).

Levy talked about his experience in doing video game movies, saying:

“They have proven near-impossible to get right,” he says. “I myself spent two years working on Uncharted. There’s something very scary about trying to do a literal transposing of an experience that audiences can already get in the game.”

But he went on to share the excitement and hope he has for this film:

“It’s a comedy, but we will never leave the emotionality of this movie," says Levy. "It’s big-hearted and poignant, which is equally as important to Ryan and I as the spectacle and the action."

This cast and story sound like a fantastic match. I am super excited for this film. Free Guy is expected to hit theaters on July 3, 2020. Check out the photo, and let us know what you think!
