Parmount+ recently offered a brief first look at the upcoming 4k Ultra HD Star Trek: The Motion Picture Director's Edition remaster.

The clip features a scene involving the U.S.S. Enterprise and it shows the footage as it appeared in the original release compared to how it looks rendered in 4k ultra-high definition. As you’ll see, the difference in visuals is impressive! Fans will get to watch Star Trek: The Motion Picture again in a way we’ve never seen it before and it’s pretty exciting.

The 4k restoration of director Robert Wise’s Star Trek The Motion Picture Director's Edition is headed for its debut exclusively on the Paramount+ streaming service. The film will use Dolby Vision's high dynamic range (HDR) and a new Dolby Atmos soundtrack. Upon its announcement in July, the remaster needed an estimated 6-8 months of work before being completed.

Wise wasn’t happy with the theatrical cut of the film, which was a rush job to get the film done and released on time. So, he made this director’s edition which gives us his true vision of the film. The version of the film was originally released on VHS and DVD in 2001, but it never got a Blu-ray release, so this 4K release is pretty exciting. The restoration is being undertaken by David C. Fein, Mike Matessino, and Daren R. Dochterman, all of whom worked previously with director Robert Wise.

Star Trek: The Motion Picture Director’s Edition is coming exclusively to Paramount+.
