First Reactions for James Gunn's SUPERMAN Hit and They're Mostly Positive

The first social media reactions to Superman are finally flying in, and it looks like James Gunn’s fresh start for the DCU may have stuck the landing!
After some early leaked reviews painted a more skeptical picture of the film, these latest first impressions are incredibly upbeat. While a few viewers called out some clunky CGI, most seem genuinely impressed with Gunn’s vision and how he handled these iconic characters.
Of course, social media reactions always come with a bit of a side-eye. We’ve all seen movies get glowing first responses online only to crash and burn a few days later when it opens in theater. But still, I’m excited about this movie, and I hope that Gunn knocks it out of the park!
Let’s see if this movie can keep flying high. Check out the first Superman reactions in the X posts below.
SUPERMAN reminds us that Clark Kent has always been a beacon of hope and the goodness that can exist in this world. James Gunn's vision is a comic book brought to life and it bought a lightness and a happiness to one of the most beloved heroes around. pic.twitter.com/Prxsgfrfdk

We saw #Superman and it was a mixed bag for our critic. Not a disaster at all (has some great moments) but not as good as hoped for. Oddly the movie short-changed a vital character - Lois Lane and, surprisingly, Clark Kent. Lots of Supes, not much Clark.

#Superman soars. It's a non-stop joyride, packed with humor, action, and emotion.

There's spectacle to spare, unbridled optimism, and a goofy unpredictability that ties everything together, even when there are a few minor issues. We've never seen DC like this, and it's great. pic.twitter.com/KM2EC0cddd
James Gunn cooked. *almost* got too goofy, but never crossed line. Optimism and hope shined bright. Slight 1978 Donner vibes, but establishes itself as a #Superman for a new age. Just what we needed! Full review Tuesday #LookUp https://t.co/DArZ8Frgfe https://t.co/Ku9crh7Fpo

I absolutely loved James Gunn’s SUPERMAN. Big themes, but still pure joy. It put me in a great mood (which isn’t often these days); it’s the happiest I’ve walked out of a theater since Top Gun: Maverick #Superman

I loved Superman! James Gunn embraces the earnest, sometimes lovably corny side of comics and their super (ahem) fun concepts in a way that evokes Raimi’s Spider-Man. Corenswet & Brosnahan have great chemistry and perfectly embody Clark & Lois. And Krypto's the best, obviously. pic.twitter.com/VtnluVFkGp

#SupermanMovie is pretty good. There's less of an overarching plot than a series of episodes. Some are great (Superman vs. Kaiju!), some are not (Superman must escape inter-dimensional prison 😴). Easily James Gunn's weakest comic book movie but I still had fun.

SUPERMAN: The closest thing we’ll get to a live-action Saturday morning cartoon. The cast (esp David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan) is literally perfect. It’s a shame it looks like that. Full review coming soon!

SUPERMAN: Gosh, I absolutely loved this. James Gunn's feature-length comic book splash page is so unapologetically silly, earnest, and intentionally corny that it utterly charmed me. Left a big, stupid smile on my face by the end. pic.twitter.com/5iKqTmUQFm

#Superman made me so damn happy. The movie is loaded with exhilarating action set pieces and well-placed humor and levity, but the beating heart of the film is Superman’s humanity, and his insistence on doing good and making the world a better place. David Corenswet brings such… pic.twitter.com/cPAcPdxmQl

#Superman absolutely soars! An awesome achievement & hopeful balm, honoring past iterations (cinema & comics) while cutting its own path. Corenswet has that heroic shimmer. Hoult is delightfully diabolical. Brosnahan brims w/ vim & vigor. Krypto’s adorbs. @Superman @warnerbros pic.twitter.com/8sS3FNFf8i

#Superman is a triumph for the new DC Universe.
— Brandon Davis (@BrandonDavisBD) July 8, 2025
It’s a comic book brought to beautiful live-action life, brimming with hope & fulfillment. It actually elicited tears of joy from me.
It’s a Superman for everyone. David Corenswet was born for Superman & Clark Kent. Loved it. pic.twitter.com/ng2CrD2gh0
#Superman is a winner. I have complaints with the Marvel levels of CGI. But James Gunn has crafted a splashy colorful superhero film with tremendous characters. Mr. Terrific stole the movie for me. Corenswet and Brosnahan shine: I can watch an entire film on their chemistry alone pic.twitter.com/yKpAqwuXCV

James Gunn’s #Superman is the perfect superhero movie and a terrific start for the new DC Studios. It’s big, bright, exciting, full of hope & it never loses its sense of wonder. Watching it felt like ripping open a comic book & feasting on its wild, chaotic imagination. Loved it!… pic.twitter.com/SfvZOAT1Mg

I wish I could watch #superman on repeat for a week.

They *finally* gave me the Lois Lane I’ve been begging for.
The world needs this movie & we can all learn so much from Superman.
I laughed. I cried. The DCU has arrived. @JamesGunn knocked it out of the park. pic.twitter.com/kUmEIF8IzX
James Gunn and the cast really bottled that classic #Superman magic in this film. As someone who grew up buried in DC Comics, this felt like watching my childhood leap off the page in real-time.

It’s for families, comic book nerds, & anyone who has ever loved a good dog story pic.twitter.com/fFGXTALJHs
I’ve seen @JamesGunn’s #SUPERMAN!
— POC Culture (@POCculture) July 8, 2025
It feels like Action Comics come to life. It’s thrilling, fun & most importantly, hopeful. @corenswet as @Superman is warm & relatable and he looks like he’s having the time of his life. He’s the perfect hero to lead the #DCU. @DCOfficial pic.twitter.com/8i1XLqvLlN
Krypto is adorable, and this by far the most HATE-ABLE Lex Luthor we have ever gotten.
— Sean Chandler (@kirkneverdied) July 8, 2025
The central conflict for Superman is very unique and character based.
The movie has so much insane stuff happening in Metropolis it makes it feel common. You get numb to the insane. pic.twitter.com/qKTlUObhX8
#Superman is everything I wanted it to be, & a million things more. It is truly awe-inspiring, both as a DC fan who has longed to see this universe onscreen in such a loving & unique way, & just as a hopeful person.

The superhero myth is not the same after this, for the better. pic.twitter.com/7qAJRCbUIw
The #Superman movie will make people happy and make people mad.
— James Viscardi (@JimViscardi) July 8, 2025
James Gunn delivers an all-timer with #Superman. He perfectly captures the essence of the character, fully embracing the fantastical elements to the point where it felt like a comic book brought to life.

While David Corenswet is already my favorite Superman, the real standout is… pic.twitter.com/cFLeoFC1Kg
James Gunn absolutely nailed it with #Superman. From the music and VFX to the camerawork and humor, he crafted the ideal light-hearted, kid-friendly family film for the summer. Every character had standout moments—especially Krypto. pic.twitter.com/NPnfz8KcDl

I’m thrilled to share with you all that #Superman is indeed spectacular. James Gunn has grown SO much as a filmmaker and storyteller, and it’s none more evident than with this film. It’s everything I could have ever dreamed of and hoped for as a fan of DC since I was a child.… pic.twitter.com/0mrDojVB3p

SUPERMAN is an absolute blast, a 2-hour comic book come-to-life that’s packed with thrills, humor, heart, and tons of characters with vibrant visuals throughout. It’s campy and tons of fun; I can’t wait for the next chapter! Corenswet/Hoult are stellar!

THE DC UNIVERSE IS HERE! pic.twitter.com/QTJlMnSa12
Just saw #Superman
— Dorian (@doriantalks) July 8, 2025
Wow! What a blast! James Gunn delivers a fun, emotional, ACTION-PACKED movie and accomplishes to make Superman look COOL.
Lex Luthor is a terrifying and credible villain and I hope to see a lot more of him.
The DCU is off to an amazing start. pic.twitter.com/oMfd2Z78Lb
SUPERMAN is weighed down by a needlessly convoluted plot, bordering outright muddled, and a mix of tones that never quite settles. While its spectacle is engaging, Corenswet’s performance is the real stunner, delivering an incredible presence. Hoult is good but underutilized. pic.twitter.com/tC4gBtTu3H

#Superman is THE Superman movie for the ages. It's everything you want from the character and more. Amazing action, hillarious dialogue, and new/refreshing takes on characters you love.
