First SONIC THE HEDGEHOG Footage Screened at CinemaCon and Jim Carrey Will Be The Best Part of the Movie
We really haven’t seen much from the upcoming Sonic The Hedgehog movie, but today during Paramount Picture’s CinemaCon presentation, they showed the footage and I’ve gotta say… I wasn’t really impressed.
First of all, I was never a big fan of the Sonic character design that they came up with. It just doesn’t work for me or a lot of the other fans, and seeing Sonic in action didn’t change that. Nothing about Sonic impressed me. The story they came up with of Sonic teaming up with James Marsden to save the world from Dr. Robotnik is unimpressive.
You know what is impressive, though? Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik. He is going to be the best part of the movie because he brings his classic Jim Carrey comic style with him! This is Jim Carrey being Jim Carrey and I was extremely entertained by the footage that they shared of him.
They actually showed two separate trailers. One for Sonic and another one for, as Carrey say, “the real star of the film”, and I just wanted to see a movie about Dr. Robotnik! That was the entertaining and fun trailer!
The footage opens up with Sonic racing through the streets at high speed and James Marsden‘s cop character, who clocks the blue hedgehog speedster at around 700mph on his radar gun. Sonic races down the highway listening to “Gangsta’s Paradise”, and when Sonic and Marsden properly meet, Sonic asks Marsden to help him save the world. We also get to see Sonic morph into his super fast rolling ball mode in which he breaks the speed of sound sending a shockwave and tearing a car apart in the process. Don’t worry, the car was his target.
As for the footage showed of Jim Carrey, it was just a lot of classic Carrey physical comedy along with some amusing lines of dialogue that had the audience busting up with laughter. While I know some people aren’t going to care for what Carrey does with the character, I enjoyed it.
But, the movie as a whole doesn’t really look that good. For the most part I was unimpressed. Will it be entertaining enough to attract the Sonic fans? I have no idea. This movie could easily bomb, but at the same time, it might also succeed with the kid and family market. Only time will tell.
The film follows a “Small-town sheriff Tom Wachowski journeys to San Francisco to assist Sonic, an anthropomorphic blue hedgehog who can run at incredible speeds, in his battle against Dr. Robotnik.”
Ben Schwartz provides the voice of Sonic, “an anthropomorphic juvenile delinquent blue hedgehog who can run at supersonic speeds and is on the run from the government.”
Sonic the Hedgehog opens in theaters on November 8, 2019.
