Alejandro Gonzalez Iñárritu (Birdman, Babel) undertook an ambitious period movie The Revenant with cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki (Birdman, Gravity). Their goal was to shoot only using natural light, which ballooned the shooting schedule up to six months, but the results are just stunning. Set in the 1800s, the movie follows a frontiersman played by Leonardo DiCaprio who is out for revenge on the men who left for dead after he was mauled by a bear. What I found crazy is that it's based on a true story.
This looks to be the best kind of Oscar-bait and has a great cast with Tom Hardy, Domhnall Gleeson, Will Poulter, and Lukas Haas, all of whom I assume will be hunted down by DiCaprio. The Revenant is opening in theaters December 25th to some very fierce competition, let's hope it doesn't get lost in the fray.
