Florence Pugh, Julia Garner, and More in the Running to Play Madonna in a New Biopic
Florence Pugh (Black Widow) and Julia Garner (Ozark) are in the running to play Madonna in a new biopic film that’s currently in development. They seem to be the highest-profile actresses up for the role, but there are a few others as well.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, some of the other actresses in the running include Alexa Demie (Euphoria), Odessa Young (Mothering Sunday), and Emma Laird (Mayor of Kingstown). Then there are musicians including Bebe Rexha and Sky Ferreira, who have also reportedly been part of the search.
The audition process for these actresses is described as being "grueling," with up to 11 hours a day of choreography sessions with Madonna's choreographer and Madonna herself as well as singing auditions. The role calls for an incredibly talented individual who will "have to be able to do everything."
The process of trying to find the right actress has been going on for months. It will be interesting to see who actually ends up landing the role. Evan Rachel Wood is playing Madonna in the upcoming film Weird: The Al Yankovic Story. You can see a photo of her in the role here.
Madonna is set to direct her own biopic that will tell the story of her life and career. Diablo Cody (Juno) was originally writing the script, but she was replaced by Erin Cressida Wilson (The Girl on the Train). The movie reportedly ends with the singer's 1990 Blonde Ambition tour, but this may change as the script is still being developed.
Spider-Man producer Amy Pascal is on board to produce. When talking about why she is making the movie, Madonna said, "The reason I’m doing it is because a bunch of people have tried to write movies about me, but they’re always men.” She also said:
“I want to convey the incredible journey that life has taken me on as an artist, a musician, a dancer — a human being, trying to make her way in this world. The focus of this film will always be music. Music has kept me going and art has kept me alive. There are so many untold and inspiring stories and who better to tell it than me. It’s essential to share the roller coaster ride of my life with my voice and vision.”
Which of these actresses would you like to see take on the role of Madonna?
