Focus of STAR WARS Episodes VIII and IX Revealed?
While we are still waiting to see more from J.J. Abrams Star Wars: The Force Awakens, some additional information has leaked regarding Rian Johnson's Star Wars Episodes VIII and IX.
It's not a huge amount of information. Basically, we just have some info on who the focus of the films could be on. I'll throw out a SPOILER alert for anyone who isn't interested in knowing what the info entails.
It comes from an email obtained by Daily Beast from co-President of Production for Columbia Pictures Michael De Luca to Sony Pictures Entertainment co-Chairman Amy Pascal. Talking about the Star Wars films, he says,
"Rian Johnson as you know is doing the main ones, episodes 8 and 9 of the Luke and Leia story lines, after JJ. Not sure anything is gained by looking at what Lucasfilm is doing except we are stalking all these people too."
So the next two Star Wars movies are going to focus on the storylines of Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia. This makes sense, especially since one of the earlier rumors we heard about Star Wars: The Force Awakens is that Han Solo was considered a co-lead. I guess the other two original characters need to have their main stories told as well.
I wasn't sure how much of a role the original main players would have in the next two installments of the new franchise. I thought maybe there was a chance that the franchise would just be handed off to the new characters introduced to us in the the teaser trailer, but that doesn't seem to be the case, which is great! I'm happy to know that we will continue to see these original characters' storylines continue through this new trilogy.
