FOX Has Renewed Ryan Murphy's Silly 9-1-1 Drama For Season 2

TV Fox9-1-1 by Joey Paur

When I first heard about the new Ryan Murphy series 9-1-1 I was actually pretty excited about it. I normally enjoy procedural shows like this and this one explores the high-pressure experiences of police officers, firefighters and emergency operators as they are put into some crazy situations. It also features a solid cast that includes Angela Bassett, Peter Krause, and Connie Britton. There was a lot of potential here!

Unfortunately, for me, the series just comes off as being ridiculous. Since I have a fascination with true-crime, I've heard some pretty intense real-life 9-1-1 calls and this series in no way captures the true intensity of it. On top of that, the drama surrounding the characters that fill the series isn't really that interesting. Especially the arc surrounding that idiot firefighter that they just won't fire for some reason! He has got to be one of the most annoying characters on TV. The writing for the series also comes off as being flat. It needs a punch of reality because everything comes off as being fake.

I obviously have issues with it, but there's an audience out there who must be enjoying it because the series has been picked up for a second season by Fox. After seeing how bad it was, I wasn't sure that would happen, so the fact that it's getting a Season 2 surprised me. Gary Newman and Dana Walden, chairmen and CEOs of the FoxTelevision Group had this to say in a statement:

“With a bold concept, award-winning stars and a flawless execution, Ryan, Brad and Tim have done it again. They have tapped into the cultural zeitgeist and reimagined the procedural as only they could, bringing it to life with a dream team of actors led by Angela, Peter and Connie. This is storytelling at its best and we’re so pleased that it’s resonated with our audience. We’d like to thank everyone involved with this production for their stellar work, and we look forward to another thrilling season of ‘9-1-1.’”

He must be watching a different series than me. Look... I love the concept of this series, the people involved are extremely talented, but they could've done a lot better. I probably feel that way because I know a little more about how things really work in real life and this series just comes off being silly compared to that.

Who knows, maybe it will get better, but I most likely won't be watching to find out. Have you watched the series? If so, what do you think about it?
