Frame by Frame Teaches You How to Scare Properly

Videos by June Smith

I'm a huge fan of the YouTube channels GameTheory and FilmTheory. Both view themselves as the smartest show on the internet about video games and movies, and so far, they've given me no reason not to agree. FilmTheory's new show "Frame by Frame" is built to help you get a great film theory education without having to spend a single dime. Their first episode was about frame composition and the evolution of editing to tell your story. This latest episode is all about utilizing things outside the frame to establish the space around the character, a technique most often used to scare the piss out of you in horror movies! The film I distinctly remember watching and realizing how effective this technique is was when I saw Alien for the first time.

What is one movie you've seen that utilizes this technique to effectively make you dump your drawers?
