Frances Conroy is in Talks to Play The Joker's Mother in JOKER
Frances Conroy, who is best known for her roles in Six Feet Under, American Horror Story, The Mist, and more, is in talks to play The Joker's mother Penny in director Todd Phillips' Joker. If cast she will join Joaquin Pheonix who is playing the title character. It was previously reported that Robert De Niro and Zazie Beetz are in talks as well. Be Niro would play a reporter and Beetz would play a single mother who catches the attention of the Joker prior to his transformation the villain.
Conroy is really good at playing a crazy person, so if that's what they are going for with this character Penny, she's going to be great in the role.
Phillips is directing the film from a script he co-wrote with Scott Silver, and then there's Martin Scorsese who is also a producer on the film. The studio describes the story as being an "exploration of a man disregarded by society [that] is not only a gritty character study but also a broader cautionary tale."
Joker is "meant to be different from other comic book superhero movies". The story is also said to "delve into what it took for the Joker to become a mastermind criminal" and rumor has it that the film story was inspired by The Killing Joke and that it revolve around a failed comedian who ends up becoming a criminal.
Joker is due to begin shooting September in New York. The studio has set an October 4th, 2019 release date.
