Frank Castle Is Stepping Into Iron Man’s Old Spot in SPIDER-MAN: BRAND NEW DAY, and Jon Bernthal Explains the Dynamic
Ever since Robert Downey Jr.'s Tony Stark took Tom Holland's Peter Parker under his wing in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, fans have watched Spider-Man grow from an eager teenager into a seasoned hero. But after Stark's death in Avengers: Endgame, that guiding presence disappeared, leaving Peter to figure things out on his own.
Now, Spider-Man: Brand New Day looks ready to introduce a completely different kind of influence into Peter's life, and it's hard to imagine anyone further removed from Iron Man than Frank Castle.
Instead of a billionaire genius with high-tech armor and life lessons, Peter is about to spend time alongside Marvel's most ruthless vigilante. Jon Bernthal has confirmed that The Punisher will fill a mentor-like role in the upcoming film, but don't expect anything that resembles Tony Stark's fatherly relationship with Spider-Man.
During an interview with ScreenRant, Bernthal was asked if Frank Castle might end up being the "fun uncle" to Peter Parker. His answer perfectly sums up what audiences should expect.
“Fun uncle? More like a derelict older brother,” Bernthal stated. “Look, we got to bring a lot of who we are to each other into this, which I think was great. There was a real openness to explore and play and find it, to make it authentic to who we are and how we feel about these characters.”
That's an interesting way to describe the relationship. Peter has always looked up to heroes who tried to steer him in the right direction.
Frank Castle operates by an entirely different code, one built around intimidation, violence, and permanently removing criminals from the equation. Watching Peter navigate that influence could easily become one of the most interesting parts of Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
Of course, bringing The Punisher into a Spider-Man movie creates a unique balancing act. Spider-Man stories usually lean toward optimism and humor, while Frank Castle exists in a much darker corner of Marvel storytelling. Bernthal acknowledged that challenge and praised the creative team for making it work.
“I think it was a challenge with the tonality to bring a character like Frank into this world and I’m so appreciative to these guys,” he continued. “I believe that this is a Frank that you’d believe walking out of that set (One Last Kill) and onto this, and vice versa.”
That should be reassuring for longtime fans of Bernthal's version of the character. Frank won't suddenly become a lighter, sanitized version of himself just because he's sharing the screen with Spider-Man.
Bernthal first debuted as Frank Castle in Netflix's Daredevil Season 2 before leading two seasons of The Punisher. After Marvel officially folded the Netflix shows into MCU continuity, the character returned in Daredevil: Born Again Season 1 before starring in the Disney+ Special Presentation The Punisher: One Last Kill. That story helped pave the way for his appearance in Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
The footage Marvel has released so far also hints that audiences won't be meeting Peter and Frank on their first adventure together. The trailers suggest some time has passed before the events of the movie begin, and it looks like these two heroes already know each other. That opens the door for an off-screen history that the film will gradually reveal as the story unfolds.
It's a smart and fun direction for Marvel to take. Peter Parker has already experienced life with an Avenger as his mentor. Pairing him with someone like Frank Castle completely changes the dynamic and gives Spider-Man a partner who constantly challenges where he draws the line between justice and vengeance.
If Marvel can capture that clash without losing what makes either character work, Spider-Man: Brand New Day could deliver one of the MCU's greatest partnerships yet.
