Frank Miller’s First TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES Art is Here and It’s a Full-Circle Moment
After decades of influence that helped shape the very identity of the franchise, Frank Miller has officially stepped into the world of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, by drawing them himself.
This isn’t just another variant cover announcement. It’s a full-circle moment that ties together the roots of the Turtles with one of the most important comic creators to ever touch the medium.
Miller, the creative force behind The Dark Knight Returns and Sin City, has unveiled his first-ever TMNT artwork for IDW Publishing’s milestone Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #300.
The reveal dropped via The Hollywood Reporter, and it delivers exactly what fans would hope for, the Turtles reimagined through Miller’s unmistakable art style.
When Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird created the Turtles back in the early 1980s, they were riffing on Miller’s work on Daredevil. That influence is baked into the origin DNA of the franchise.
A radioactive accident gives rise to heroes. A disciplined mentor guides them. A dangerous ninja clan lurks in the shadows. Daredevil had the Hand, and the Turtles got the Foot.
Now, decades later, the artist who helped inspire all of that is finally putting his own spin on Leonardo, Donatello, Michelangelo, and Raphael.
“It was fun to jump into the playground with the Ninjas for this cover and reminisce that they were born by Peter and Kevin as homage to my Daredevil run,” Miller said in a statement. “This one is for the fans.”
This is a nod to a legacy that Miller helped spark without even realizing how far it would go.
Issue #300 celebrates every TMNT comic published, all the way back to the original Mirage Studios debut in 1984. IDW, which has been publishing the series since 2011, is going all in on the milestone with a stacked lineup of covers and extras.
Fans can also look forward to a never-before-seen cover from Eastman and Laird themselves, which makes this release feel even more like a reunion of creative forces.
On top of that, there are variant covers from J. Scott Campbell and Juan Ferreyra, along with a blind bag edition for collectors who like a little mystery with their comics.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #300 hits shelves on July 22, and it’s shaping up to be one of those rare comic book moments that actually lives up to the hype.
