FREE SOLO Filmmakers To Direct a Cave Rescue Movie Set in Thailand

Oscar-winning Free Solo filmmakers Jimmy Chin and Chai Vasarhelyi are set to direct a new film that will tell the story of the 2018 Tham Luang cave rescue in Thailand.

The film follows the Wild Boar boys soccer team, aged 11-16, “who with their coach became trapped 1,000 meters below the surface by monsoon rains. They were ultimately rescued over the course of three days from July 8-10, 2018. The risks of the harrowing rescue were underscored July 6, when a retired Thai Navy SEAL died in an underwater passage, followed by three SEALs who were hospitalized after their oxygen tanks ran low.”

This certainly sounds like a scary experience that will make for a super intense film. Chin and Vasarhelyi seem like the right filmmakers to tell this story. I love what they did with Free Solo and I’m excited to see how they handle a narrative story.

Screenwriter Wes Tooke (Midway, Colony) is currently writing the screenplay for the film.
