Full Trailer for Richard Linklater’s NOUVELLE VAGUE Explores the Making of Godard’s BREATHLESS

Netflix has released the full trailer for Richard Linklater’s new film Nouvelle Vague, a stylish tribute to the groundbreaking French New Wave. After premiering at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival, the black-and-white drama is currently making the festival rounds at TIFF and NYFF before opening in theaters this fall.

Shot entirely in French, the film dives into the story behind Jean-Luc Godard’s revolutionary 1960 classic Breathless and even mirrors the same playful, free-spirited energy that defined Godard’s original work.

The logline reads: “Un film de Richard Linklater. This is the story of Godard making Breathless, told in the style and spirit in which Godard made Breathless in 1960.”

Linklater cast fresh faces to capture the spirit of young artists breaking cinematic rules in the 60s. Making his feature debut, Guillaume Marbeck steps into the role of Godard, while Zoey Deutch portrays Jean Seberg alongside Aubry Dullin as Jean-Paul Belmondo. The ensemble also features Paolo Luka Noé, Alix Bénézech, and Jade Phan-Gia.

Early reactions from Cannes praised the film as a playful yet thoughtful reimagining of how Breathless came to life, with Linklater embracing the same renegade style in hopes of sparking new creativity among today’s filmmakers.

Nouvelle Vague continues Linklater’s adventurous career, following hits like Dazed and Confused, Before Sunrise, School of Rock, Boyhood, and his most recent film Hit Man.

The screenplay was written by Vince Palmo, Michèle Halberstadt, Laetitia Masson, and Holly Gent, with Halberstadt and Laurent Pétin producing.

Netflix will release Nouvelle Vague in select theaters on October 31, 2025, before it begins streaming worldwide on November 14.
