Fun RESERVOIR DOGS Stories Told By Quentin Tarantino and Cast at 25th Anniversary Retrospective
Reservoir Dogs recently had their 25th Anniversary Retrospective at the Tribeca Film Festival. The film was shown and a panel was held at the event with Quentin Tarantino and most of the cast. While telling stories about the movie, quite a few interesting details arose. Here are just a few bits of trivia revealed.
The original Park City screening was a disaster. Apparently, while they were first showing it at the Sundance Film Festival, multiple problems arose, including the power going out at the standoff part of the film. The lights began to come up at a different moment. The film was shown with a projector that made it look bad. At one point Quentin Tarantino jokingly blamed Steve Buscemi, because he went to the screening even though it was bad luck. Luckily the second week of Sundance went much better, and many studios saw the masterpiece that it was.
33 people had walked out of a Screening. Many screenings apparently had walkouts, the most being 33. Mostly due to blood and torture. One of the many people who had walked out of the screening was director Wes Craven. Tarantino recalled this moment at the Spain Sitges Horror Film Festival.
"I thought, 'Finally I’ve got an audience that won’t walk out' and I even joked about it while introducing the film. Five people walk out of that audience, including Wes Craven! The f—ing guy who did The Last House on the Left walked out?! My movie was too tough for him."
The Torture “Stuck in the Middle With You” Dance Scene was Improvised. Michael Madsen was very scared to do the dance torture scene at all. He was worried because he didn't want to be killing someone who had a child because he himself had recently had a child. They ended up shooting takes of it, which was shot without any prior rehearsal. He hadn't even listened to the song. Madsen based it on James Cagney and a dance he did in a movie he had seen with Cagney in it. All in all, I think he nailed it.
Tom Waits was an actor who had auditioned for the role. There were apparently many actors who had auditioned for parts in the film including actor/singer Tom Waits. At the audition, Tarantino had Tom Waits read the part of the film about Madonna singing Like a Virgin. In the end, Tom wasn't chosen, but even of the actors who were chosen, many were interested in different parts. Harvey Keitel was interested in playing Mr. Blonde. Michael Madsen wanted to play Mr. Pink. The only person who knew exactly what part he wanted was Tim Roth who read straight through the script and knew he wanted to be Mr. Orange.
So, there are just a few of the fun facts that were learned from the panel. It's quite interesting hearing how good of a time they had on the set. Of the experience, Tarantino said it was the happiest time of his life, which you can really tell through the filmmaking. You can read more from the panel here.
