Funny Video Features The Cast of Ryan Reynold's Action Comedy FREE GUY and There Are New Details
Ryan Reynolds has a new action-comedy coming out called Free Guy and it sounds like it’s going to be a blast. The movie comes from director Shawn Levy and also stars Taika Waititi, Jodie Comer (Killing Eve), Joe Keery (Stranger Things), Lil Rel Howery (Get Out), and Utkarsh Ambudkar (Pitch Perfect).
It was previously explained that the story is in the vein of The Truman Show, where a bank teller named Guy, who is stuck in his routine discovers he’s a background character in a rather brutal open world, action-adventure video game and he is the only one capable of saving his world. The bank that Guy works in gets robbed 17 times a day.
The film recently had its panel at NYCC where the cast and crew offered up some new details on the movie. A delightful promo video was also released that features the cast amusingly talking about the film and other things like how Ryan Reynolds and Taika Waititi were in Green Lantern together, which is something they hilariously wouldn’t admit to.
When talking about the film during the panel, Levy explained (via /Film), “Ryan and I talked about Free Guy as a superhero origin story minus the capes and tights and IP. If you lived in a world where anything is possible and you mastered the game, your powers would be limitless.”
Reynolds also talked about one of the biggest influences of his character, which comes from a movie he loved growing up called Being There. He explained, “Peter Seller’s a nice and gentle guy and that changes the world.” He went on to explain:
“I haven’t been this fully immersed and engaged in something since Deadpool, so this spoke to the moment in a huge way. We live in really weird times right now, you go to the news and it’s end of times but five seconds later, it’s what’s between Katie Couric and Tyga. I feel a kinship of feeling like a background character in the world, where you’re in an automatic loop and have no control over the world.”
The report goes on to offer more details on the story explaining that “Guy is the journey of the innocent in a deeply cynical world and that brings him face-to-face with Antoine, the video game publisher and wildly charismatic asshole, who stole a piece of code from programmers Millie (Comer) and Keery’s character. The movie toggles back and forth between the real world and the world of Free City, Levy explained, with Free City designed to look saturated, brightly colored, and clean.” Levy went on to explain that, “Real life is messy, but the world inside the game is more aspirational and more heightened reality.”
It’s also revealed that “some of the real world will spill into that game in the form of Easter eggs, which include gaming references and cameos from several popular streamers including Ninja, Jacksepticeye, Pokimane, and LazarBeam.”
The movie sounds like it’s going to be a blast! I really like what I know about the film so far. Free Guy hits theaters on July 3rd, 2020.
