FX Officially Orders Live Action FAR CRY TV Series From Noah Hawley and Rob McElhenney
The live-action adaptation of the Far Cry video game franchise is finally moving forward in a huge way. FX has officially given the project a series order, setting the stage for a high profile TV take on one of Ubisoft’s biggest properties.
If you have been waiting to see how this wildly unpredictable world would translate to live action, this update delivers exactly the kind of momentum fans were hoping for.
FX confirmed that the plan is to develop Far Cry as a limited anthology series. Every season will dive into a brand new story with its own setting and cast. It is a structure that mirrors the way the games reinvent themselves with each installment and it opens the door for fresh creative opportunities every year.
For a franchise that thrives on different villains, exotic locations and chaotic open world adventure, the anthology format feels like a perfect way to handle the project.
The series comes from Noah Hawley, the creator behind Fargo and Alien: Earth, along with Rob McElhenney. The It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia co creator who will also star.
The show will stream on Hulu in the United States and on Disney Plus internationally, widening its reach for longtime fans and newcomers.
Hawley explained what makes this franchise such an exciting creative challenge, saying, “What I love about the Far Cry game franchise is it’s an anthology. Each game is a variation of a theme, the same way each season of Fargo is a variation on a theme.”
He went on to describe the appeal of building a shifting, action driven story each year while exploring heavier ideas, calling it “a dream come true”.
Nick Grad, President of FX Entertainment, emphasized the studio’s strong track record with both creators. “FX has had magnificent partnerships with Rob Mac and Noah Hawley for a combined six series and 32 seasons of television, and we couldn’t be more excited that they are teaming up for Far Cry.”
Grad expressed appreciation to Ubisoft for giving FX the keys to the franchise and shared confidence that the show will be “original, gripping and wildly entertaining.”
The Far Cry franchise has been a massive force in gaming since its debut in 2004. More than 100 million unique players have explored its open world maps, intense first person combat and standalone narrative arcs.
The latest entry, Far Cry 6, arrived in 2021 and featured Giancarlo Esposito as the ruthless antagonist Antón Castillo.
With FX backing the project and Hawley leading the creative charge, the live action adaptation has the potential to bring the spirit of the franchise to life in a way fans have been hoping to see for years.
If the show embraces the same high energy storytelling and memorable villains that define the games, viewers might be in for something very cool.
