GAMBIT Producer Says Channing Tatum Was so Upset When the Movie Fell Apart, He Threw a Chair

We’ve been hearing a lot of stories lately about the falling apart of Gambit, and the hard time that Channing Tatum with the devastating news. In a recent interview with The Associated Press, Tatum and his producing and directing partner, Reid Carolin, sat down and talked more about what went down when Gambit became a casualty of the Disney/Fox merger.

In what Carolin describes as a “mutant Goodfellas in New Orleans,” Tatum was set to play the title role, and the pair hoped to co-direct the picture, but they were willing to forgo that part of the deal as long as the film moved forward. Now we know that didn’t work out, and Carolin recalls:

"I remember when Gambit was falling apart, Chan threw a chair across the room. I just remember thinking putting two years into that…"

Tatum then jumped in, adding:

"You put two years, and I had put in four and a half. I was developing it and producing it with a multitude of other directors for various reasons, some from the studio and some from me and they just never got done. The amount of time. The amount of sweat and tears. Look, it was a gauntlet to run and we got so close and for it to not have happened, maybe you truly have to say, 'Maybe it wasn't meant to be.'"

Carolin concluded:

"We wanted to make a romantic comedy superhero movie. The thesis was the only thing harder than saving the world is making a relationship work. We were right on the one-yard line ... We had cast the film. We'd opened up a production office. We were on our way to shoot in New Orleans."

These guys sure are bummed it didn’t work out. I feel like most fans weren’t down with the casting of Tatum in the movie, but I bet it would have been decent. There was so much passion in the project, I bet it would have been fun. Too bad. Maybe one day we will see it resurrected. But don’t tell Channing, I wouldn’t want him to get his hopes up.
