GAME OF THRONES Author George R.R. Martin Says Gandalf Could Kick Dumbledore’s Ass
Looks like Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin is looking to stir up a debate between Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings fans.
Martin was recently interviewed with Tolkien stars Nicholas Hoult and Lily Collins to discuss their personal connection to Tolkien and the Middle Earth world that he created. While talking to Variety, Martin talked about its influence on Game of Thrones, saying:
“He made me love the form he created — epic fantasy. He redefined fantasy of everything that had been before. I started doing a trilogy called ‘Game of Thrones.’ Now my trilogy is seven books — if I finish the last two.”
If!?! He better finish them! You can’t start something like that and not finish it! He went on to say that the Tolkien biopic was “profoundly moving” and “praised the movie for avoiding cliches like a struggling writer sitting at a typewriter and crumbling a piece of paper.” He went on to talk about how the film focuses on “Tolkien’s love affair. His friendship. Him as a young man in his university years. And that influences what he would later write.”
While the interview was going on, Lily Collins chimed in and said that while she is a fan of Tolkien, her favorite book series is Harry Potter, and that’s when Martin dropped the following comment:
“Gandalf could kick Dumbledore’s ass.”
This is a debate that fans have been having for years, so now that we all know where Martin stands on the issue, the debate has resurfaced. I agree with Martin, though, and I definitely think that Gandalf could take out Dumbledore if they ever faced off with each other.
A few years ago we did a live GeekTyrant VS show at a convention where two teams debated this very subject matter. If you want, you can watch that below.
