GAME OF THRONES Creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss Leave HBO for a Big Netflix Deal

After developing the epic Game of Thrones fantasy series for HBO that fizzled out at the end, creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are leaving HBO for a new home. They have signed a massive deal with Netflix where they will be writing, producing, and directing new films and TV shows.

I imagine HBO won’t really miss them after how they handled the season finale of Game of Thrones. But they are excited to start a new chapter in their careers at a new production home. They had this to say in a statement:

“We’ve had a beautiful run with HBO for more than a decade and we’re grateful to everyone there for always making us feel at home. Over the past few months we’ve spent many hours talking to Cindy Holland and Peter Friedlander, as well as Ted Sarandos and Scott Stuber. We remember the same shots from the same ‘80s movies; we love the same books; we’re excited about the same storytelling possibilities. Netflix has built something astounding and unprecedented, and we’re honored they invited us to join them.”

Netflix CCO Ted Sarandos added:

“We are thrilled to welcome master storytellers David Benioff and Dan Weiss to Netflix. They are a creative force and have delighted audiences worldwide with their epic storytelling. We can’t wait to see what their imaginations will bring to our members.”

Well, they delighted audiences at first and then pissed them off. It’ll be interesting to see what Benioff and Weiss end up developing for Netflix. Hopefully, they learned from their mistakes with how they handled Game of Thrones.

According to sources, their new deal in in the “9-figure range,” which isn’t a bad pay day. I’d take it! The two are supposed to be developing a series of new Star Wars film for Lucasfilm as well. It was previously confirmed that their Star Wars film will be the first one we see after The Rise of Skywalker, and it will come in 2022.
