Last year it was announced that Netflix ordered a new sci-fi epic series based on the Chinese book series Three-Body Problem with Game of Thrones series creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss set to write and executive produce alongside Alexander Woo (The Terror). Rian Johnson, Brad Pitt, and Rosamund Pike also serve as producers on the series.

It’s now being reported that Hong Kong filmmaker Derek Tsang (Better Days) has been hired to direct the first episode of the ambitious series and help set the tone.

The series will cover all three books in the trilogy, which include The Three-Body Problem, The Dark Forest, and Death’s End, all of which were written by Liu Cixin.

The books tell the story of what happens “when humanity discovers that we are not alone in the universe and prepares for an alien force arriving from a distant and inhospitable world. The title refers to the aliens’ star system, which has three stars orbiting each other in such a way that an Earth-type planet between them keeps suffering extreme hot and cold temperatures, repeatedly wiping out its intelligent civilizations.”

Here’s a description from the book for the story:

Set against the backdrop of China's Cultural Revolution, a secret military project sends signals into space to establish contact with aliens. An alien civilization on the brink of destruction captures the signal and plans to invade Earth. Meanwhile, on Earth, different camps start forming, planning to either welcome the superior beings and help them take over a world seen as corrupt, or to fight against the invasion. The result is a science fiction masterpiece of enormous scope and vision.

This sounds like it has the potential to be an amazing series, It’s definitely an ambitious project and I hope this creative team is actually able to effectively pull it off.
