GameStop Adds Reggie Fils-Aimé and More to Board of Directors

It is no secret that GameStop is struggling these days. People are switching from physical games to digital copies that don’t require you to go to a store, and we all have at least one unpleasant GameStop experience. However, for a while the retailer has been finding new ways to try to stay relevant including the launch of experiential stores across Tulsa, Oklahoma. Even my local store is becoming more and more about collectibles and less about actual games. Well, in a recent move that many see as another attempt at recovering the business, Reggie Fils-Aimé has joined GameStop’s board of directors.

Fils-Aimé served as the president of Nintendo of America from 2006 to 2019 and many gamers have a deep love and respect for the man. It’s almost been a year since his retirement, but it looks like he’s not slowing down any time soon. He took to Twitter to share the news:

In addition to Fils-Aimé, J.K. Symancyk (CEO of PetSmart) and Bill Simon (a veteran retail business executive) have joined the board as well. George Sherman, GameStop chief executive, released the following statement:

The board refreshment and governance enhancements announced today represent an important milestone in GameStop’s transformation as we continue to evolve the company’s business strategy for long-term success.

We are pleased to welcome Reggie, Bill, and J.K. to the board,” says Sherman. “They are each highly qualified and bring significant, relevant experience to our turnaround. We look forward to immediately benefitting from their expertise and perspectives as we navigate the evolving gaming and retail environments, execute on our strategic initiatives and prepare the Company to maximize value-creation associated with the next generation of console launches later this year.

Are you excited about these new additions? What do you think GameStop could do to help recover?
