Garfield Creator Jim Davis Drew a Galactus Story For Marvel Comics Where Galactus is Basically Garfield
Garfield is one of the biggest jokes on the internet. Not necessarily because he's funny, but sometimes actually because of his lack of funniness. There has been Garfield minus Garfield, along with plenty of other funny jokes. Well, Jim Davis, creator of Garfield, is getting his own chance to draw for Marvel Comics now.
In a special Squirrel Girl issue where the characters in the Marvel Universe will be writing their own comics telling stories. Ryan North, the writer of Unbeatable Squirrel Girl has contacted many different artists to add their own style and influence to the comic to give each character who writes in it a voice. One of those voices is Galactus.
Jim Davis will be drawing the panels for the Galactus segment of the comic, having Galactus basically be a cosmic Garfield and Norin Radd, aka Silver Surfer, will be Jon. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Jim Davis said this:
"Ryan explained to me, he wanted it to be done in our style. He likened and wrote Galactus as Garfield and Norin Radd as Jon. That determined what they were going to look like. When you look at the Silver Surfer, he's 75 percent of the way there anyway with Jon, all we had to do is give him the big eyes. That was a natural. John kind of hangs around Garfield anyway, he's the straight man to Garfield's gags and has to get him food. He's like Garfield's herald. Galactus was tougher. We were throwing stuff back and forth, and the initial sketches weren't working for Galactus. I said okay, we gotta make him fat. The guy eats planets, for god's sake! Once we do that, it's a little less Galactus but certainly a lot more Garfield. It looked more natural. Obviously, Galactus has put on a few mega-tons for this strip."
This brings so much joy to the random side of me. Having Galactus be Garfield is just funny enough without feeling like it's a gimmick. In any other comic, I would say it wouldn't work, but Squirrel Girl has a way with making the bizarre seem normal. This only inspires me more to want to read Galactus minus Galactus cartoons where Silver Surfer just talks to himself about being alone in the Galaxy. What do you think?
