GARGOYLES Creator Greg Weisman Says He Would Love to Collaborate With Jordan Peele on a Future Adaptation

Last week, Gargoyles creator Greg Weisman sat down with Polygon for a lengthy interview about the series and its legacy. I reported part of that conversation in an article you can read here, in which Weisman talked about the fact that the OJ Simpson trial and the rise of Power Rangers each had an impact on the demise of the classic animated series.

Later in the interview, Weisman was asked what he thought about the fact that writer, actor, and director Jordan Peele had approached Disney with a pitch to adapt Gargoyles for the big screen back in 2018. Weisman said:

I think it’s accurate that he was interested, but I can’t speak to how far those conversations went. I touched base with him on Twitter, just saying, ‘Hey, I don’t know if you know who I am…’ And he’s like, ‘I do know who you are!’ That was gratifying, but that’s as far as it went, you know? I don’t want to overstate it, it was like, he’s Jordan fucking Peele, and I’m Greg Weisman! My understanding — not inside information, just my understanding — is that he expressed an interest in the property. And Disney didn’t say no. But by not saying yes, that answers the question. You know, they didn’t want to say no to Jordan Peele, but they also didn’t want to say yes to Gargoyles. So it just didn’t go anywhere.

It didn’t go anywhere then, but now with Gargoyles streaming on Disney+, it seems the series has gotten a second wind, and people are talking about it again. Weisman went on to make it clear that if Peele is still interested, he is too!

I’d like to think — I don’t know this, I want to make that clear — that he’d still be interested in doing something with it if a new opportunity arose. I can’t say for sure if that’s true, I have no idea. But I would hope so. I’m a huge fan of his. Should he read this article, I would love to work with him. But I don’t know how realistic that is.

Maybe it’s a little more realistic now that the show is seeing a new wave of popularity? Weisman stated in the article that he believed Disney’s acquisition of Marvel and Star Wars is what completely pushed his property out of the minds of Disney executives, but I think that with Disney+, there’s actually room for a lot more projects of differing types. Fans love the Marvel and Star Wars projects coming up, but I think there’s also a huge audience for a Gargoyles feature or series reboot. Especially if Weisman and Peele are involved!
