Gaten Matarazzo Talks About the Fate of Dustin and Suzie in STRANGER THINGS
Stranger Things has come to an end, and the finale centered on tying up loose ends, and seeing the group of friends move on with their lives.
While most of the peripheral characters were at least seen in the final episodes, and many of them given a direction to head in, one character who played an important role in seasons 3 and 4 was noticeably absent.
In season 3, Gaten Matarazzo’s Dustin Henderson returned from camp with word of a summer romance. Suzie Bingham, who Dustin affectionately referred to as Suzie Poo, was played by Gabriella Pizzolo, and just when Dustin’s friends doubted her existence most, she came through and helped them save the day.
Returning to help again in season 4, Suzie was the MVP, proving not only her impressive intellect, but also her love of Dustin, aka Dusty Buns.
So what happened to Suzie and Dustin? Their story wasn’t given an onscreen confirmation, but Matarazzo sat down to talk about the ending of the series with Business Insider, and he revealed what he thought happened between the pair.
When asked if he and the Duffers had talked about Dustin and Suzie’s fate, the actor explained:
“I didn't have a conversation with them about it. I think, unfortunately, what can be assumed is that in Dustin's yearlong unhealthy grieving process — I mean, if he's cutting out the friends that are day-to-day spending time with him, you can imagine he probably cut out a long-distance relationship.
“I would like to think he did so nicely. I don't think he did so nicely, because he wasn't very nice at that point in his life. Or maybe she was sick of his shit. Maybe she was just like, ‘I'm not dealing with this.’ And that would be very tremendously fair of her.
“So I can imagine she was like, ‘I don't have time for any of this.’ So I like to think she probably broke up with him.”
That’s fair. Dustin was in a very dark place after losing Eddie, and most first relationships don’t last, much less the ones that have long distance, death, and saving the world against destruction up against them.
Stranger Things seasons 1-5 are streaming now on Netflix.
