GATTACA Is Getting a Sequel Series From the Creators of HOMELAND for Showtime
The 1997 film Gattaca was one of those little indie sci-fi films that blew my mind when I first saw it. That movie was such a great film, and after all these years, we are getting a sequel series by Homeland creators and producers Howard Gordon and Alex Gansa.
The original film is set in a future where genetic engineering has become the norm, and people's potential is determined by their DNA. The story follows Vincent (Ethan Hawke), a genetically inferior "in-valid" who dreams of traveling to space but is relegated to menial jobs due to his genetic makeup. To achieve his goals, Vincent assumes the identity of a genetically superior "valid" named Jerome (Jude Law), who becomes his accomplice. Vincent eventually lands a job at the Gattaca Aerospace Corporation, but his cover is jeopardized when the mission director is murdered, and investigators collect genetic evidence from the scene.
The new series will take place a generation after the events of the film, “when science and humanity have evolved to the point where we can direct our own evolution. Genetic engineering has created a world in which parents can determine the future of their children before they are born (the Valids), which by default has created a new underclass, no longer determined by social status or the color of one’s skin (the Invalids).”
I’m actually excited about this series! It sounds like this story is going to dive into some fascinating territory. I liked how Homeland played out, it was a smart and well-written series, so there’s a good chance this Gattaca show is going to be solid.
The series is being written by Gordon, Gansa and Craig Borten, and the will also executive produce the series alongside Glenn Gellar, who runs their SPT-based company, as well as Danny DeVito, who produced the 1997 movie written and directed by Andrew Niccol.
