GEARS OF WAR Film Moves Forward With a Writer of the AVATAR Sequels
Last year, near the end of 2016, Universal and Microsoft announced they would be working together to develop a Gears of War film. The studio is moving forward with their plan and they've hired a writer to get the ball rolling.
Deadline reports that Shane Salerno is their choice to pen the script. He is a well-known writer in the business who has given us such masterpieces as Savages... um and Alien vs Predator: Requiem? Uh- wait ok. He wrote Shaft and Armageddon. Those were good...ish. He's also involved with writing all the new Avatar films for James Cameron. So there must be something good about this guy.
I have never been a huge Xbox gamer or Gears of War fan, but it still interests me a bit to know if this film will be a good video game movie. I mean the game looks like the characters are beefy slabs of steak with faces and guns, but the movie might try something different.
Gears of War co-creator Rod Fergusson said the film "would not be based on any particular game but instead be a new story set in the universe. That universe is the fictional planet of Sera, where a squad of beefed-up commandos living in a bombed-out postapocalyptic society battle swarms of alien creatures called Locusts."
I don't know. I mean if Assassins Creed couldn't do it, what hope does Gears of War have? I really want video game movies to succeed. I want it to legitimize gamers who say they enjoy the storyline of the games to people who roll their eyes in disbelief. Maybe Gears of War will do that. Maybe not. What do you think?
