Genndy Tartakovsky on His R-Rated Animated Comedy FIXED and Says The Humor Isn't Pop Culture Related

Genndy Tartakosvky has been developing an animated passion project of his titled Fixed, which is about “a dog who finds out he's gonna get neutered in the morning,” and the story follows what he does with his next 24 hours.

When previously talking about the movie, he offered a bit more insight on the film, saying he’s following the “101 Dalmatians rules, but it's got swearing and these R-rated things." The director has now offered some additional insight into the movie in a recent interview with The Wrap, and how he never thought the movie would get made, but thanks to more people being open-minded to adult animation, the movie is getting made.

"When you think back to 2010/2011, adult animation is in a totally different place than it is now. It's quite different. For us to do an R-rated feature back then was way beyond its days. It didn't feel like there was any movement on it."

Tartakosvky is developing the film with Sony Pictures Animation and Renegade Animation, a Glendale, California-based studio co-founded by Darrell Van Critters, a veteran of Warner Bros. Animation and Disney Animation. The director went on to say:

“We’re doing a 2D animated rated-R movie. That is the golden ring that we’ve been after since we were in our early 20s. We would never think. And on top of that, it’s well-animated.”

In describing the animation, Tartakovsky said he was heavily inspired by Disney’s classic Lady and the Tramp, and says that “There’s feelings of that in there.” He went on to describe the movie and it’s tone, saying that it won’t include pop cultures humor:

“It’s raunchy but it’s got character and it’s cartoony. And it’s got heart. The humor isn’t pop culture humor. That’s the biggest thing. There’s no Kardashian jokes. There’s none of that. It’s all character humor. That’s what makes it much more unique and stand out. It feels like nothing else.”

I actually love that there will be no pop culture jokes, as that will not only set it apart from the animated comedies being made these days, but also the live-action comedies. This movie is doing something fresh and different with the humor and I’m excited about that.

Tartakovsky went on to say, “I’m beyond excited about it. It’s 12 years in the making.” There’s no release date yet, but I’ll be looking forward to it!
