George Lucas’ Epic Lucas Museum of Narrative Art Sets Opening Date for September 2026

After years of anticipation and construction, George Lucas’ dream project is finally ready to open its doors. The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art will officially debut in Los Angeles on September 22, 2026, marking the culmination of a vision that’s been over a decade in the making.

Originally scouted for San Francisco and Chicago, the museum ultimately found its home in L.A., which is a fitting choice for a place that will celebrate the art of storytelling in all its forms.

While fans can expect a touch of Star Wars magic within its walls, Lucas’ vision goes far beyond a galaxy far, far away. His goal has always been to honor the power of stories that shape culture, history, and imagination.

“Stories are mythology, and when illustrated, they help humans understand the mysteries of life,” Lucas said in a press release.

His wife and collaborator Mellody Hobson added, “This is a museum of the people’s art—the images are illustrations of beliefs we live with every day. For that reason, this art belongs to everyone. Our hope is that as people move through the galleries, they will see themselves, and their humanity, reflected back.”

The Lucas Museum collection will showcase more than 40,000 works of art, spanning centuries and styles. It began with Lucas’ first art purchase back in college, an illustration of Alley Oop, the time-traveling caveman, and has since grown into one of the most diverse storytelling collections in the world.

Visitors can expect to see pieces from legendary artists such as Norman Rockwell, Jessie Willcox Smith, Maxfield Parrish, N. C. Wyeth, Winsor McCay, Frank Frazetta, George Herriman, Jack Kirby, Robert Crumb, Frida Kahlo, Jacob Lawrence, Charles White, Utagawa Kuniyoshi, Robert Colescott, Judith F. Baca, and Diego Rivera.

And yes, Star Wars fans, there will be plenty to geek out over. The museum will also include the complete Lucas Archives (1971–2012), preserving original Lucasfilm materials that reflect Lucas’ dedication to storytelling across film, art, and technology.

Designed by renowned architect Ma Yansong, the futuristic building itself looks like something straight out of science fiction. The curving, sculptural design will be surrounded by a lush green park crafted by landscape architect Mia Lehrer.

Inside, visitors will find not only galleries but also two theaters, a research library, a restaurant and café, and even a retail store for collectors and film lovers alike.

The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art isn’t just a place to admire paintings or movie memorabilia, it’s a celebration of imagination and the stories that connect us all. And come September 2026, fans of art, film, and pop culture will finally get to step inside this long-awaited creative universe.
