George Lucas Has Always Wanted to Direct The Last STAR WARS Sequel

Now that Colin Trevorrow is no longer directing Star Wars: Episode IX there is lots of speculation about who could take over, Rian Johnson, J.J. Abrams, Ava DuVernay? One name that not too many people are talking about said decades ago that he would gladly do it: George Lucas.

A long time ago, in 1977, only months after the first Star Wars exploded in theaters, Lucas spoke to Rolling Stone magazine and said the following:

"I think the sequels will be much, much better. What I want to do is direct the last sequel. I could do the first one and the last one and let everyone else do the ones in between."

Back then, Lucas was obviously referring to what would become Return of the Jedi, a film he ended up not even directing. But he did, make three more Star Wars movies after that, only they took place before the original three. He has also said since then that he’s retired from directing these kinds of movies, and hasn’t really been a fan of what’s happened. So truthfully, this is just a fun coincidence. 

George Lucas does care enough about Star Wars that he often talks to Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy about the franchise. They haven't done much, if anything he's suggested, but maybe Lucasfilm, would consider tapping the grand master of all things Star Wars to wrap up this latest trilogy? It's not likely going to happen, but it's interesting to think about.

Also, it's obvious, since the Disney takeover, there is no way Star Wars: Episode IX is going to be “the last sequel.”
