George Lucas Liked STAR WARS: ROGUE ONE, and See Gareth Edward's Movie Poster Notes
There are a lot of hardcore Star Wars fans currently holding their tickets to go see Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. We are getting so close to the film's release, and there's been a lot of news and details about the film flooding the internet recently. In this post we find out what George Lucas thought of the movie, we see some poster notes from director Gareth Edwards, and we learn what the director stole from the set.
Very few people have seen the full cut of the movie, and one of those people is George Lucas. In case you've been wondering what he thought about it, Edwards said that he liked the movie, which is a big deal to him:
"Two days ago, we got to show George the movie. We all had a phone call and I got to speak with him yesterday. And I don’t want to put words into his mouth, but I can honestly say that I can die happy now. He really liked the movie, so it meant a lot. To be honest, and no offense to anyone here, it was the most important review to me... and I will take that conversation to the grave. It was a real privilege and his opinion means the world to me."
I would have loved to hear that conversation, but Edwards is obviously incredibly happy with what Lucas had to say to him about the film. I'd be ecstatic, too, if I made a Star Wars movie and Lucas told me he loved it!
Edwards was involved with pretty much every aspect of this film production including the marketing. I haven't really been a big fan of most of the posters that have been released as they've been pretty weak. But an image of one of the posters for the film popped up online featuring some note from Edwards on how to make it better. It's pretty amusing because, as you'll see, it's clearly a joke. Among other things, he wants the “visual effects & animation by Industrial Light & Magic” credit be in a smaller font, ILM chief creative officer John Knoll‘s “story by” credit be removed from the poster, and says that he wants the “directed by Gareth Edwards” credit to be enlarged. Edwards also revealed in a Facebook Live interview that the one prop he stole from the set of the film was the Death Star plans, which seems absolutely appropriate. He said:
There was only one thing I wanted out of the whole shoot, and the entire time I kept whispering to people like, Where do you keep that? Where will it be at the end? How do I get ahold of it? Can I have it? And it was like, Oh, no, this is going to be archived, it’s part of film history. So I obviously didn’t do this, because then they’d want it back.... I stole the Death Star plans.
I wouldn't count on Lucasfilm or the Empire getting them back from him. I'm sure he's already locked them away in a place that no one can find.
